Overcoming Adversity with Character

08.27.2015 This week Bob Woosley reflects on golfer Ollie Schniederjans and overcoming adversity.

As many of you know, Frazier & Deeter recently announced a partnership with an aspiring young PGA golfer, Ollie Schniederjans. Ollie and his family have had a close connection with Frazier & Deeter since he was a child. Ollie is a talented and driven young gentleman who also happens to have been the world’s number 1 amateur golfer for a record 41 weeks in a row.

Ollie is very driven to achieve his goals and after last week we are seeing the true character of the young man emerge as he deals with the disappointment of being tantalizingly close, yet not being able to take a next step in his process. As profiled in this late August Golf Channel article, Ollie came within one shot of qualifying for the Tour Finals, which would have given him a great shot to earn one of the coveted 25 PGA Tour cards.

I had an opportunity to be with Ollie’s family and follow him last Friday as he competed in the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, NC. Ollie needed a great round to make the cut at 3 under and he missed it by only one shot; coming in at 2 under par. One shot!

How does one respond when you come so very close to achieving a goal only to come up one shot short? I will tell you how Ollie is handling it, with class and determination. Here is what he had to say: “I’m just motivated now to put all this behind me and win something,” he said. “I know I can compete and win out there.” Ollie went on to say: “It’s definitely a lesson for everyone, how important every single shot is.”

It strikes me that it is how one handles adversity that is the truest test. How many entrepreneurs, business owners, and executives have we seen through the years that have had to deal with setbacks and failures yet to persevere and ultimately emerge successful? Many people have talent  many fewer have the right attitude and character to face down set-backs.

We were rooting mightily for Ollie last week in Greensboro and we wanted so much for his score to be 3 under instead of 2 under. That said, we are more proud of Ollie than ever because he is demonstrating what true character is all about. Ollie, I know there are many of our clients who would join me in saying that this set back….and how you will overcome it…. will make your ultimate success so much the sweeter.

We applaud you for the class you are showing us all.
